Literature; The Renaissance
This second paper assignment is designed to help you think more deeply about the texts we have read from the Renaissance and draw some conclusions about the literature of this era by making an interpretive argument. You will choose a literary technique and argue that an author we read uses it in a particular way to show us something interesting about the text. Your thesis statement does not have to follow a strict formula, but you should put it in boldface font so I know which sentence is your thesis. Examples of literary techniques include: simile, metaphor, rhyme, imagery, and irony. You do not need to use one of these examples; you can choose whatever techniques you found interesting in what we read. There is a link to a list of techniques on Moodle with short definitions of each.
I am looking for depth, not breadth: do not try to cover everything we have read, but instead focus your paper on something specific and delve deeper than we went in class. Do not simply summarize the text or repeat what was said in class. Some guidelines for success:
You should use evidence from the text to support your argument. Use quotations. Explain how they help support your argument.
Make sure that your argument is worth arguing. An argument like “Shakespeare uses irony” just identifies the technique in the text, without making an interpretation. No one would argue against this. A better way to discuss this idea would be “Shakespeare uses irony to show that love can transcend preconceptions about who we think we should love.” Think about why an argument matters to how we read the text.
Stick to your topic. Do not summarize or go off track. As you write, look back at your bolded sentence to remind yourself of what you are arguing.
Proofread carefully and make sure your paper is organized and clear. Each paragraph should have a topic sentence that relates to your thesis and connects to the previous paragraph. You should have a title (not “Paper 2”) and a conclusion. This should represent your best work.
I suggest you start by looking back at your notes to see what stuck out to you as you were reading. What caught your attention? What surprised you or caught you off guard? Try to go beyond the obvious. I do not want you to repeat back what was said in class; this is your opportunity to go beyond class discussion and show me what you thought about the material we have read.
Your paper should be 3 pages, typed and double-spaced in a reasonable font size with reasonable margins.
Paper has to be written from one of these sonnets your choice only pick one of them.
