Read and answer these questions using the first chapter of the text. (Unit 1: The Good And The True)
1. Compare and contrast what Plato and Martin Luther teach us about the Good and the True. What are the differences between their beliefs and/or the similarities. A minimum of three differences and/or similarities must be discussed in order to earn all points. Claims must be supported by direct quotes from texts in order to earn full credit (six quotes in total).
2. Luther declared in The Freedom of a Christian the paradox that “the Christian is the freest lord over all things, and under the authority of none; a Christian is the most dutiful servant of all, and under obligation to everyone.” Discuss how this seemingly contradictory statement is actually not a contradiction. The explanation must make at least three claims, each supported by a direct quote from the text (three quotes in total).
3. In Plato’s Apology, Socrates provides his ideas about wisdom. Discuss what Socrates believes are the necessary ingredients, so to speak, for wisdom. Provide at least three “ingredients,” each supported by a direct quote from the text (three quotes in total).
