When it comes to global issues, the United Nations (UN) is almost always involved. The UN occupies multiple roles in the global community. For example, during the Pakistani floods of 2010, the UN was the center of relief efforts for the devastated area. The UN secured funding for emergency aid and coordinated long-term service efforts to address dire conditions in the aftermath. At the same time, the UN maintained its role in promoting democratic governance in Pakistan. Examining the complex role of the UN informs your understanding of how service is provided and administered in the global community.

To prepare for this Application:

• Review Chapter 4 in the course text International Organizations: The Politics and Processes of Global Governance. Focus on the history, evolution, and position of the UN in the global community. (Attached)
• Consider the role of the UN in the global community.
• Think about the ways in which the UN promotes democracy in the global community.

The assignment: (1–2 pages)

• Analyze and explain the role of the UN in the global community.
• Explain how the UN promotes democracy in the global community. Be specific and provide two examples to support your response.

Support your Application Assignment with specific references to all resources used in its preparation. You are asked to provide a reference list for all resources, including those in the Learning Resources for this course.
