Assignment Description Professional Platform for Ethics and Leadership The role of the health care professional includes being a moral agent or a person whose actions affect themselves and others at a moral level. It is important to have a personal ethic or moral framework in which you ground your practice and professional relationships. The purpose of this assignment is to explore and create a foundation for leadership and ethics in your professional practice. Write a reflection on the nature, sources, and implications of your values, beliefs, and ethical perspectives that guide your personal life and nursing practice. Please note, grading is based on the clarity and depth of your writing and the apparent effort given the assignment, not on the rightness or wrongness of your position. You are encouraged to be honest in your self-assessments and conclusions. Each of the following points must be addressed in your essay: Primary influences (childhood and adult) my adult best friend was my childhood best friend. We have been friends for over 30 years. She is also a registered nurse but recently received her Master’s, family nurse practitioner (FNP). I believe we are so close is because of our upbringing and the same culture. We both have always enjoyed taking college courses for fun. Although neither of us really had an idea of careers, we took random courses. Ethical principles that influence you personally and professionally: Personally, when I care for patients, I treat them with empathy and compassion as if they were my family. When I first decided I wanted to become a registered nurse, my mother in law talked with me about treating people as if they’re my family and this had stuck with me for 19 years. Professionally, I enjoy learning about Oncology and new treatments. Obtained my Oncology nurse certification (OCN) this past year and I use to attend conferences but not lately due to COVID. Ethical practice of professional nursing: One of the issues I have working in a chemotherapy clinic at the VA hospital is giving an 80-year-old patient chemotherapy. At this point, let’s make the patient comfortable because chemotherapy had many side effects and can impede the quality of life. There have been many situations that I have brought up to the ethical committees about treating a patient that can not sign consent. I question whether the individual knows to report a fever, diarrhea, chills, nausea, or pain. Does the patient understand the as needed meds such as antiemetics or anti-diarrhea medications? Ethical leadership and professional development plan. Include both positive and negative aspects of your character that emerge when you are in a position of authority. The negative might be that I sometimes question myself, did I make the right call? For example, recently I had a patient with a history bipolar schizophrenia calling the radiation outpatient unit complaining of not feeling well. The nurses asked her to call 911 but the patient refused. The patient was scheduled for a dressing change in the chemo clinic on the following day. The nurses mentioned her complaints and her thoughts did not make sense. However, when I met her the next day the patient denied ever feeling ill and denied any complaints. I later learned the patient was admitted to a different facility for sepsis. When I am in a position of authority, I think of how my manager would handle conflict. My manager is caring, calm and collected. Assignment Expectations: Length: 1100 to 1500 words total. Structure: Include a title page and reference page in APA format.
